DC BLOX’s Investment in Birmingham, Alabama

Serving Locally in Birmingham, Alabama

DC BLOX opened the Birmingham data center campus in 2019, providing secure, reliable digital infrastructure that supports critical healthcare, research, education, and government services across the region.

The existing Birmingham facility currently uses less than 1 megawatt (MW) of power, much less than many industrial operations in the area, and it delivers essential digital services for the community.

DC BLOX is commited to joining community and business leaders to support growth and collaboration in Birmingham. Community partnerships are a cornerstone of our mission to serve locally and connect globally with the intent of building strong connections that extend beyond our Birmingham facility into the community we serve.

How DC BLOX is Invested in Birmingham

Job Creation

DC BLOX’s data center campus will generate both direct and indirect jobs across construction, security, facility management, and technical operations, while also attracting new regional infrastructure providers to serve the area, driving long-term employment, investment, and regional economic growth.

Community Partnership

Just like every community where we do business, DC BLOX works closely with Jefferson County officials, institutions, and organizations to support economic and educational advancement and has since 2019.

Our Planned Birmingham Expansions

DC BLOX has executed a contract to extend the existing data center, adding approximately 5MW and 36,500 square feet (about the size of a small grocery store). Construction for this phase is expected to occur between Q2 2026 and Q4 2027.

In addition, DC BLOX is evaluating a larger future expansion on an adjacent 16-acre parcel that would add up to 60MW of power capacity and approximately 263,000 square feet (about the size of a big-box retail store).

Local Economic Value of Our Data Center

The DC BLOX Birmingham data center represents a long-term capital investment in Jefferson County. Once operational, the expanded campus will contribute significantly more property tax revenue, helping offset the local tax burden while placing minimal demand on public infrastructure such as schools, roads, and public safety services.

The Birmingham data center also complements the region’s diverse economic base and strengthens critical infrastructure through investments in fiber connectivity, water and sewer capacity, and power grid resiliency that benefit the broader community.

What is Driving the Need for More Data Centers?

We all are. A data center is a specialized facility that houses the “brains” of digital services: computers, software, and networking equipment that store, process, and transmit data. These facilities contain servers, storage systems, and network infrastructure that power the applications and services businesses, governments, and individuals rely on every day.

The growing demand for digital services is driving the need for expanded data center capacity. All the digital tools and services people rely on (such as internet browsing, online shopping, streaming services, social media, healthcare systems, emergency services, and more) depend on digital infrastructure to function. Anyone who uses the internet or a smartphone relies on data centers to access these services at work, home, and school.

As demand continues to increase, communities without sufficient digital infrastructure may experience slower service performance, reduced reliability, and could face limitations in accessing new applications and technologies in the future. Continued investment in local data centers helps ensure that local businesses, public institutions, and residents have reliable access to the digital services that are essential to our daily lives.

Addressing Common Questions & Concerns

Will my power bill go up?

No. Recent increases in electricity rates in Alabama are not the result of data center usage. DC BLOX’s existing Birmingham facility currently uses less than 1 megawatt (MW) of power, which is significantly lower than many industrial operations in the area. Alabama Power has frozen electricity rates through 2027, and DC BLOX expects to pay for all new energy infrastructure and usage required to support the growth of our facilities.

Will these data centers impact our water resources?

No. The existing Birmingham data center uses a waterless cooling system similar to a residential air-conditioning system. For the planned 60MW expansion, DC BLOX will use a hybrid air and closed-loop water cooling system that recirculates water and discharges no waste into the environment. Once initially filled, the system requires no additional municipal water. The initial water volume needed is approximately one-third of the water contained in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Are there health risks from living near a data center?

No. DC BLOX data centers use no hazardous materials and generate no environmental waste. Backup diesel generators are used only during utility outages and brief monthly testing and do not impact local air quality. While data centers emit some electromagnetic fields (EMFs), concrete construction significantly reduces emissions, and remaining levels are comparable to those found in typical office buildings. EMF levels will be tested by an independent third party.

At DC BLOX, we live by our values: Trust, Teamwork, Tenacity.
